An intimate alpine experience in the Buffalo River Highlands. Work alongside our expert dogs to unearth one of nature's most prized treasures.
About the Truffière
Perched on Sunset Ridge in the Buffalo River Valley, with Buffalo Mountain keeping watch over the orchard, Western Buffalo Truffières sits in one of Australia's most extraordinary alpine settings.
We grow Tuber melanosporum, the prized Périgord black truffle, in harmony with the land. Our orchard practices organic cultivation and sustainable harvesting, because we believe the best truffles come from healthy soil and a patient hand.
Our tours are small, personal and deeply rewarding. Whether you are a seasoned foodie or coming for the pure adventure of it, the Buffalo River Highlands will leave its mark on you.
Book Your PlaceMeet the Family
Western Buffalo Truffles is run by hand, not by head office. From planting the first oaks to walking every tour ourselves, our family has poured years of care into this orchard on Sunset Ridge.
When you visit, you are not joining a tourism franchise. You are stepping onto our family's land, meeting our dogs, and sharing in something we genuinely love doing.
What's Included
Work alongside our highly trained truffle detection dogs as they lead you to hidden black truffles beneath the orchard floor. An unforgettable partnership between nose and earth.
Discover the ancient story of the truffle, from mediaeval European forests to the alpine soils of Victoria. Understand what makes our region ideal for this prized fungus.
Learn to assess truffle quality the way professionals do. Nose, shape and texture each tell a story, and our experts will teach you to read them with confidence.
Linger in the orchard with Buffalo Mountain as your backdrop. Take in the mountain air, the quiet landscape, and the extraordinary privilege of harvesting season.
We cap every tour at 10 guests. That means genuine personal attention, a relaxed pace, and an experience that feels exclusive rather than crowded.
There is nothing quite like finding your own truffle. It is part adventure, part discovery, and entirely delicious. Come ready for something you will be talking about for years.

One of the most genuinely special mornings I have had in Victoria. The dogs, the mountains, the smell of fresh truffle. Nothing compares.

Before You Arrive
The Périgord black truffle season at Western Buffalo runs from June through August each year. This is the heart of the Victorian alpine winter, when conditions are perfect for both the truffles and the experience.
The Buffalo River Highlands is beautiful in winter but can be brisk. We recommend warm, layered clothing including a waterproof jacket, sturdy walking boots, and a beanie. The orchard can be muddy after rain, so please leave the good shoes at home.
Absolutely. Children love the dogs and the treasure hunt element of the experience. We recommend the tour for children aged 6 and above. Please note that the tour involves walking on uneven ground, so please dress children appropriately for the terrain and conditions.
We are located at Sunset Ridge, 2 McLees Road, Buffalo River VIC. The drive from Bright takes approximately 25 minutes via the Buffalo River Road. We recommend arriving a few minutes early as the tour departs on time. Parking is available on-site.
Yes. Fresh truffles are available for purchase during the season subject to availability. You can also order online via our truffle store. Truffles are best enjoyed within a week of harvest and should be stored wrapped in paper in the fridge.
